ARRIVING AT
THE NURSERY

What is a childcare agreement?

After you have received a confirmation from a nursery, you enter into an agreement.

The agreement is called a childcare agreement.

There is very important information in this document. For instance:

  • Childcare hours
  • Notice period
  • Persons who are allowed to pick up your child from the nursery
  • Additional costs for the nursery (for excursions, nappies etc.)

Read the agreement at your leisure.

If you do not understand something, have it explained to you.

You can also ask for a translation.

Here you will find a leaflet with the most important information of a childcare agreement.

What documents do I need for the nursery?

Nursery voucher

Check-up booklet from the paediatrician

Signed childcare agreement

Vaccination card

What does familiarisation period mean? How does this work?

The starting phase in the nursery is called ”familiarisation period”.

Your child is supposed to slowly settle in at the nursery and gain confidence.

This takes time.

In the beginning, you stay with your child.

If your child feels comfortable at the nursery, he/she will increasingly stay alone longer.

One person at the nursery takes special care of your child.

This person is called a caregiving educator.

Each child handles familiarisation at the nursery differently.

Familiarisation can take 4 weeks or longer.

Plan for this time. Our checklist will help you with that.

In the beginning, your child may not stay at the nursery for that long.

Spend plenty of time with your child during this time – even outside the nursery.

Here is an example:

Day 1-3:

  • You stay with your child at the nursery.
  • You and your child get acquainted with everything.
  • You stay 1-2 hours per day.

Day 4-14:

  • The first separation takes place.
  • You stay in the nursery.
  • If your child cries, come right back and comfort your child.

Day 15-28:

  • Your child stays alone at the nursery.
  • You can leave the nursery.
  • You can agree with the nursery how long your child will stay.
  • You must be reachable by telephone at all times.
  • If your child is not feeling alright, come back.

End:

  • The familiarisation period is finished when your childcare hours have been exhausted.
  • The childcare hours are specified in the agreement.
  • In some nurseries there is an interview at the end.
